How do the buildings in Venice stay afloat? The first settlers built the islands on a foundation of tree trunks gathered from the mainland. Due to the particular timber and to the silt of the seawater, the trunks petrified instead of rotting. In another thousand years and as long as they stay submerged, they will become stone piles. So why is Venice sinking?
