Pompei guided tour
Starts this day trip from Rome to Pompei with the visit to the archeological site. There is a certain excitement when witnessing the sleeping beast that is Vesuvius; in AD 79, the dormant giant buried Pompeii in an instant beneath plumes of burning ash, stopping the time at that moment and preserving the ancient city for us to discover it!
Once the most famous and flourishing encampments of ancient Rome, now an ode to the power of a fallen empire, Pompeii was an immense market-town and the favored resort for the majority of wealthy Romans. Despite that terror that occurred that day, what is left is a marvel: immaculately preserved baths, richly decorated houses, villas, bakeries and mills, temples, and the oldest theater known to man – dating back to 80 BC. All of this only serves to enhance the illusion of being deeply immersed in the daily lives of two thousand years ago.
From a city frozen in time, step forth into Sorrento – once a Greek village, later to be taken over by the Roman empire – the beauty of the location drew in Romans seeking respite from the humdrum of their daily lives. Their seafront villas are now little more than ruins but offer a great insight into their opulent lifestyles, and the lasting beauty of the town makes it the picture-perfect stop-off for lunch.
